There were plenty of memorable moments in the 2018/19 Championship campaign in our first season under the tutelage of manager Marcelo Bielsa and there were of course, some moments to forgot. One of those was the reaction of striker Patrick Bamford in the feisty clash with Aston Villa towards the end of the campaign.
The game may have ended with one goal apiece, but there were fireworks in all directions as Bielsa instructed the players to let them equalise, with Pontus Jansson summarily ignoring him, and plenty of on field clashes between the players and sly digs being taken.
One not so sly dig was Bamford falling to the ground like he’d been shot by Anwar El Ghazi, who saw red, but later had it rescinded on appeal with Bamford takin the suspension for simulation.
With some of the first team squad out in Australia as we continue our preparations for the Manchester United clash, Bamford was quoted recently by the Birmingham Mail and he admitted he had made a meal of the contact – but still insisted there was contact.
“Once I’ve put that in people’s minds it’s going to be hard to change that. But it’s something I’ve got to do over the next few years. Looking back, I regret it. I maintain he touched me but I milked it and made a stupid deal of it. I wouldn’t do it again and it’s something I have to learn from.”
He certainly does as the reputation has been built, and he’ll find it far harder to shake it than he did to gain it.
